Q. The current bathroom is very small and has an adjacent room that could be used. What is the best way to go about starting a home remodeling project? Who to contact, etc?

A. Designers have much more knowledge and experience in remodeling than the average person. They can introduce you to things you never though possible; as well as, ensure your vision is created. Q. We hired a contractor back in October to remodel our kitchen. The remodeling was supposed to be done before Thanksgiving. It was almost finished except for the trim and one shelf which were not yet finished. We were then promised it would be done by Thanksgiving, as we were hosting dinner for all of our family. It wasn't finished. We were THEN told it would CERTAINLY be done by the time we had our Christmas party on Dec. 19th. It wasn't. And you guessed it...it still isn't finished. The problem is...our contractor paid the cabinet maker in full and I suppose he has no incentive to return. It has mostly been left on my shoulders to call and hassle the cabinet maker. Yesterday, I called the contractor (who hired the cabinet maker) twice, and got no answer, no return. I'm FED UP! It's been 3 months now, and the job is not finished. I considered calling an attorney, but I'm afraid that would cost as much as calling in someone else to finish the job. What are my options at this point?

A. I'm sure you've figured out that this is why you never pay ahead of work being done. That said, I think you're better off hiring someone new to come in and finish it. The lawyer would be expensive and the cost to finish it shouldn't be that high. Even for a small project like this, however, get it in writing and make sure you're satisfied before you pay in full.

Q. I am thinking about remodeling my 2 bathrooms, both of which currently have 72"-wide double vanities. The new vanities I am thinking of buying would need some of the water lines moved a few inches. For example, I would like to install 2, 24"-wide vanities (one at each end of where the 72"-wide unit is now) and put a piece of furniture in the now-open 24" space in between. The problem is that the 24" vanity has a drawer on the bottom and when I look at the current water pipes/connections, one pipe is coming in only a few inches from the bottom of the current cabinet - right where the drawer would be on the new cabinet. In the other bath, one of the water lines is probably 27-28" in from the left end of the 72"-wide cabinet, which means it is in what would be the space BETWEEN the new 24"-wide cabinets. (I hope all this makes sense!) So my question is, how difficult a job is it to move water lines a few inches up, down, to the right, to the left? And what might be a ballpark cost of this kind of job? FYI, my house is on a concrete slab (very unusual in New Hampshire) but the pipes are coming in through the wall, and all the plumbing currently works well. Anyway I hope I don't have to give up on remodeling my bathrooms! Thanks!!

A. That's not very difficult, just remove the drywall, expose the piping, then re-cut and solder the pipe where you want it. If you had the piping entirely exposed and the water shut off and drained from the system, a plumber could do it in about an hour and charge you maybe $150, or you can DIY

Q. Is it possible to change this parallel kitchen to the peninsula kitchen? We are in Houston, TX. We would like to make a partial remodeling for our kitchen. What concern us the most is the kitchen sink and dishwasher? Can we change it like that? It would be great if we can know the estimate cost for this work? A. You won't get much of a peninsula if you have a ten foot will "galley" kitchen. You will need to have four feet between the end of the peninsula and the front of the cabinet on the opposite side of the kitchen. Invite a cabinet maker in to give you an estimate. The kitchen cabinet business is currently pretty slow. You should not have any trouble finding one to come in to draw up a plan, They should do it free of charge. Good luck!

Pendant lights -- Lights that hang down from the ceiling, often a foot or more If you're installing new kitchen cabinets, you can also look into under cabinet lights.
